The Metro, giclee, 2012

While living in downtown Los Angeles, Bunkall was drawn to the theaters of the 1930s and 40s. He painted these relics as they appeared, as monoliths of a past age. The Metro, 1992, is one of the finest examples of the genre. The title on the marquee is evidence of Bunkall’s captivation with early filmmaking. The 1921 German film, “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” was a favorite.
